Current students Jamie Jay and Fran Houseman recently paid a visit to the Midlands branch of the CLA, a membership organisation for owners of land, property and businesses in rural England and Wales. As recipients of the CLA Charitable Trust Scholarship, the pair went to find out more about the work of the CLA and how this may link back to their studies of BSc (Hons) Rural Enterprise and Land Management (REALM).
The scholarship is funded almost entirely by subscriptions from CLA members and provides grants to like-minded companies and individuals. Jamie spoke about the scholarship saying, "The award has unlocked some great opportunities such as attending the CLA Rural Business Conference and representing the CLA at the Oxford Farming Conference. As a student looking to have a successful career in land management, these opportunities have benefited my personal development and academic achievement."
Jamie and Fran were particularly interested in finding more about the Rural Powerhouse campaign. Backed by over one hundred Parliamentary signatures, the recently launched campaign seeks to encourage commitment to policy measures designed to improve productivity in the rural economy. In studying REALM, the students look at best practise to become modern managers of rural land and enterprise. Such campaigns draw new voices into the discussion around sustainability and agriculture which, in turn, helps the students to understand varying perspectives and the best ways to educate others.
Should you be interested in the study of REALM at Harper Adams, you can attend on of our Land and Property Experience Days. As a free, one day event, prospective students aged between 14 and 19 can find out exactly what a career in the field entails as well as meet other individuals to share in their passion. Our next Land and Property Management Experience Day is on Wednesday 5th February 2020. To find out more, register below.
